A POEM A DAY
GIANTS IV
The Giants napped
Through the humid afternoon.
Sapped and sweaty
They played foot games
And rubbed each other
And kissed each other
And finally slept
For about an hour
Before going shopping
Like Giants.
A POEM A DAY
CHEERFUL
Let’s switch gears here for a sec:
Everything’s not always a wreck,
There’s no noose around my neck.
Feel free to stop by and check.
Yes, the bottle can be a bitch,
And I do love to scratch that itch,
But I probably won’t die in a ditch
Unless my system has a glitch.
What’s my system, you may query,
And I understand you might be leery,
But I’m getting very weary
Of waking up hungover and bleary
So my plan is to stop that shit
And maybe I’ll eventually get
To a place where I’m okay with it
But right now I wanna get lit.
A POEM A DAY
DESTROYER
One shot, two shots, three shots, four,
Five shots, six shots, then some more.
Get fucked up and hit the floor.
Watch your wife walk out the door.
Smoke up, snort up, shoot up drugs,
Spend your time with gangsters and thugs.
Dodge accusations with nods and shrugs
And sweep that shit under the rug.
There’s no problem here, my friend.
There’s no help that you can send.
I am nowhere near the end
Of the self-destruction I intend.
A POEM A DAY
I WILL DRINK
I will drink until I cannot walk.
I will drink until I cannot speak.
I will drink until I am a circus geek
Covered in my own shit and
Biting the heads off live chickens.
You think I exaggerate.
You think I overstate the fact.
Well listen, Jack,
I will drink you under the table
Then lie there in my own vomit.
I am not trying to boast.
I am not trying to brag.
I am saying it’s a drag
To love the liquor
More than I love myself.
A POEM A DAY
GIANTS III
And so the Giants fought throughout the night
And the moths tended their wounds among the mighty blows
And the dark earth did rumble with their stompings!
And the dark sky did echo with their howls!
And the moths were quiet
And soft
And happy to help.
A POEM A DAY
GIANTS II
And so the Giants fought throughout the day
And butterflies tended their wounds amidst the blows
And the earth did rumble with their tramplings!
And the sky did ring with their bellows!
And the butterflies were quiet
And efficient
And happy to help.

GIANTS I
So the Giants work together to make a world
Filled with fun and love and understanding
But they also work together in a world
That is the opposite of those things
So the Giants compromise
A POEM A DAY
TREE DOES NOT CARE
Squirrels climb on Tree,
Tree does not care.
Birds nest in Tree,
Tree does not care.
Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter,
Tree does not care.
Sun, rain, wind, snow,
Tree does not care.
Men come, men go,
Tree does not care.
A POEM A DAY
FEAR AND CRAVING IN TX
I used to drink a dozen beers
And keep my shit mostly together,
But there were many times I acted the fool
And a couple of times I fell in the pool
But I mainly held to my tether.
I miss Saturdays the most,
Pounding beers before noon.
I don’t miss the mornings after
And always flirting with disaster,
And being a drunken, stumbling goon.
Now moderation is for pussies so I end
The day plastered, three sheets to the wind,
Shitfaced, loaded, wasted, wrecked –
Black out, pass out, hit the deck.
I crave and fear getting drunk again.

I’ve said, time after
time, last time was the Last Time.
This time I mean it.
